A tragic head-on collision in Madera County, California, claimed the lives of eight people. The crash occurred on Avenue 7 in La Vina and involved a van carrying farmworkers and a large pickup truck. 

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of the pickup truck was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided with the van. The impact was catastrophic, killing the seven passengers in the van as well as the driver of the pickup truck. Authorities confirmed that several of the van’s occupants were farmworkers en route to their job site near Firebaugh. 

The devastating crash was witnessed by family members of some victims, who were traveling in another van behind the one involved in the accident. One of the victims has been identified by family members as 24-year-old Juvenal Jacobo Talavera from Michoacán, Mexico, who had been living in Kerman. The Mexican Consulate has been working to assist the families of the deceased. 

Authorities closed Avenue 7 for much of the day as they investigated the scene, reopening the roadway by late afternoon.

Tuesday, February 4, just after 1 pm, a multi-vehicle crash occurred on I-10 in Palm Springs that caused the death of two of the parties involved, they were identified as Fabian Zamora, a 31-year-old male from Indo, and Carolina Navarrete De Leal, a 49-year-old woman from Coachella. 

According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision occurred just after 1 pm near mile marker 49 near Washington Street. CHP Officer Rafael Espinosa told reporters that the collision happened when a white Toyota was traveling west along I-10, when for unknown reasons, the driver suddenly turned the vehicle right, colliding with a blue semi-truck. That impact caused the blue semi to crash into a disabled red semi that was pulled over on the shoulder for service. A service truck was parked in front of the red semi, and the collision caused the semi to collide with the repair truck and the repair worker, who was working on the disabled truck.

Both the driver of the white Toyota and the service worker were pronounced dead at the scene when first responders arrived.

Just after 11 am on Wednesday, January 1, two cars collided on Broadway in Lemon Grove, striking and killing 20-year-old Nadia Charles and 20-year-old Junior Joseph Juste. Charles and Juste were cousins who had immigrated from Haiti last year.
