A deadly house fire took place in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood in which two adults, a child, an infant and a dog were found dead on September 2nd. 

At about 9 AM on Saturday dispatchers received a call from an 11-year-old girl who escaped the house in the 1000 block of North 48th Street. The girl reported that someone in the house had died. When officers arrived, they found the home engulfed in flames. The door was barricaded from inside ultimately leaving officers unable to enter the home. 

Firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire and worked to extinguish the flames for nearly 45 minutes. Fire crews remained at the house throughout the day to further extinguish hot spots.

According to the Seattle Times, the family had been living at the home for two years, located at North 48th Street and Whitman Avenue North. Neighbors expressed their shock following the news of the deaths. A couple that resided near the home described hearing the police on bullhorns warning residents to “stay inside”. 

The connection the 11-year-old has with the family who died remains unclear. Initial reports from authorities suggest that someone may have shot a gun around the time the fire ignited but this has not been confirmed by police.

Police nor fire officials have confirmed whether the fire had been set intentionally. Arson and bomb investigators were also at the scene of the fire per protocol.

The Gray Fire burning in Medical Lake has destroyed more than 240 homes in the area, firefighters were able to get the fire about 90% contained. 

According to Spokane County Fire District 3 the Gray Fire has burned 10,085 acres and 452 personnel are working to fully put out the blaze. Fire crews continue to put out hotspots along the fire’s perimeter as well as mop up other areas. Level 1 and 2 evacuations are currently in place for several nearby areas. A San Diego woman describes her escape of the deadly Maui fires after abruptly being woken up by strong winds.

Theresa Cook was the first tourist of California to be identified as a victim of the fatal Maui Fires in Lahaina by officials. 

Cook, 72, was staying in a Lahaina hotel and was scheduled to fly home on August 9, one day after the fire started. In a Facebook post shared by Cook’s daughter, Cook fled on foot and eventually went missing. Authorities of Maui County announced her dead on Tuesday, August 22. 

There have been 115 confirmed deaths so far as a result of the Maui fire. This is considered one of Hawaii’s deadliest natural disasters. 43 victims have been identified, all other victims besides Cook have been Lahaina residents. The ages of the victims ranged from 45-90. 

Residents were described as having fled the fire with only their clothes on their backs, abandoning all other belongings, and jumping into the ocean to escape the out-of-control flames. 

The destructive aftermath of the fires has made it difficult for authorities to locate and identify victims. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, family members have been submitting DNA swabs at the Family Assistance Center in Kaanapali. They hope that these DNA samples will help to identify the remains of their loved ones if they are among those found. 

Authorities have searched all single-story residential properties in the disaster area as of August 22nd. They are still working on searching multi-story residential and commercial properties according to an announcement by Maui County.
