A 62-year-old woman from Fontana died after being struck by a vehicle in the driveway of her daughter’s Camp Pendleton home on July 8.

Cindy Borges was at her daughter’s home on Dogwood Street near Columbine Street standing in the driveway when she was struck by a passing Ford pickup at around 12:20 PM. At the time of the incident Cindy had bent down to pick something up, making her unaware to the vehicle’s sudden approach.

In a report by The San Diego Union-Tribune, emergency response officials arrived at the scene to find Borges with multiple chest injuries. She unfortunately died while being transported to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton.

According to authorities, the driver did not see Borges before she was struck.

“It’s extremely unfortunate that due to the overwhelming negligence of a driver, the victim died in such a tragic way, especially in front of her daughter’s home,” said Paul Starita, personal injury attorney at Singleton Schreiber and Retired Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. “The family of the victim is forever marred by this incident and by the loss of a life taken so suddenly.”

Fatal Camp Pendleton Pedestrian Accidents

Camp Pendleton, a prominent United States Marine Corps base located in Southern California, is known for its dedication to training and the defense of the nation. However, in recent years, it has also gained notoriety for a concerning trend – an increase in fatal pedestrian accidents. These accidents involving pedestrians being struck by vehicles near the base premises have resulted in tragedy and heartache for families and the military community.

A combination of factors contributes to the occurrence of fatal pedestrian accidents at Camp Pendleton. Some of the main causes include:

  • Heavy Military Traffic: Camp Pendleton is a bustling military installation with a high volume of vehicle traffic. Military personnel, contractors, and visitors often navigate the base’s roads and streets, leading to increased accident risks.
  • Lack of Pedestrian Facilities: Insufficient pedestrian infrastructure and crossing zones within the base can lead to unsafe conditions for walkers. Without designated sidewalks, crosswalks, or proper lighting, pedestrians face heightened danger when navigating the roadways.
  • Distractions: Like any other area, distracted driving or walking can be a significant factor in accidents. Mobile devices have contributed to a rise in pedestrian casualties worldwide.
  • Speeding and Reckless Driving: Despite strict traffic regulations, some drivers may still engage in speeding or reckless behavior, putting pedestrians at risk.

The Impact of Fatal Pedestrian Accidents

When a fatal pedestrian accident occurs, the repercussions reverberate through the entire community. The families and friends of the victims experience immeasurable grief and loss. The military community also suffers a blow, as the loss of a service member impacts unit cohesion and morale. Furthermore, the drivers involved in these accidents may face severe emotional trauma and legal consequences.

Additionally, these incidents can strain the relationship between the military base and the surrounding civilian communities. Public trust in the safety practices of Camp Pendleton can be damaged, leading to demands for accountability and improved safety measures.

To mitigate the occurrence of fatal pedestrian accidents at Camp Pendleton, several proactive measures should be considered:

  • Enhanced Pedestrian Infrastructure: Implementing well-marked crosswalks, well-lit pedestrian paths, and designated walking areas can significantly improve safety for those on foot.
  • Speed Limits and Traffic Calming: Enforcing lower speed limits and installing traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps or rumble strips, can reduce the likelihood of high-speed collisions.
  • Education and Training: Conducting regular safety training for both drivers and pedestrians within the base can increase awareness of accident risks and promote responsible behavior.
  • Zero Tolerance for Distracted Driving: Strictly enforcing policies against distracted driving and walking, particularly the use of mobile devices, can save lives.
  • Community Engagement: Encouraging open communication between military personnel and the civilian community can foster understanding and cooperation in addressing safety concerns.

Fatal pedestrian accidents at Camp Pendleton are a tragic reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for continued efforts to protect lives. By addressing the root causes of these accidents through enhanced infrastructure, education, and stricter enforcement, we can create a safer environment for pedestrians and drivers alike. As we move forward, let us remember the lives lost and strive to build a community that prioritizes the well-being of its members, on and off the road.

“An unprecedented and tragic loss like this unravels the lives of surviving family members, leaving them with the overwhelming aftermath of legal complications and serious out-of-pocket expenses,” added Mr. Starita. “My hope is that the family seeks out a knowledgeable legal attorney that will help them determine fault in this incident in order to receive the justice they deserve.”
