How can drivers protect themselves and others when driving on the road?

  • Drive sober – driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol reduces reaction time and impairs drivers’ ability to respond and react quickly to changing road conditions.
  • Adhere to posted speed limits – driving over the speed limit can increase the chances of an accident and the severity of injuries.
  • Obey posted signs and traffic signals – stopping at stop signs and not running red lights helps increase safety on the road and allows other vehicles to better predict each other’s moves.
  • Use signals – drivers should be sure to use blinkers to indicate to others their intentions, additionally, they should ensure that their brake lights and headlights work so that they are visible to others and their actions are appropriately communicated.
  • Avoid distracted driving – drivers should not engage in distracted driving practices such as using smartphones, adjusting the radio or car settings while driving, or eating, as it can divert their attention away from the road and cause accidents.
