A devastating crash in Clatsop County, Oregon, has claimed the lives of two young sisters and left their parents, both faculty members at the University of New Mexico, with serious injuries. The fatal collision occurred around 1:20 pm on Thursday, June 27, 2025, along Highway 101, approximately 80 miles northwest of Portland.
According to the Oregon State Police, a truck traveling along the coastal highway crossed into oncoming traffic, striking an SUV before crashing head-on into a Nissan Rogue driven by Charles LeBlanc. LeBlanc, the department administrator for UNM’s Department of Neurosciences, and his wife, Jenni LeBlanc, a long-time faculty research support officer, were seriously injured and transported to a local hospital. Their two daughters, ages 15 and 12, tragically died from their injuries.
The driver of the truck and the occupant of the other SUV were also hospitalized with serious injuries.
The loss has deeply impacted the University of New Mexico community. In a joint statement, School of Medicine Dean Patricia Finn and Department of Neurosciences Chair Bill Shuttleworth wrote, “We are all shocked and heartbroken to learn this tragic news. We keep the LeBlanc Family in our hearts and in our prayers as they recover from their physical injuries and mourn this tragic loss of their wonderful daughters.”

What Causes Head-On Collisions, and Why Are They So Often Fatal?
When a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic, the results are frequently catastrophic. Highway 101, like many two-lane roads in the Pacific Northwest, lacks a physical median to prevent crossover crashes. At highway speeds, a head-on collision can be impossible to avoid and nearly always results in devastating injuries or death.
In this crash, Oregon State Police reported that a truck crossed into the opposite lane, causing a multi-vehicle collision. While the investigation is ongoing, potential causes for this type of crash often include:
- Distracted driving
- Driving under the influence
- Drowsy or fatigued driving
- Excessive speed
- Vehicle defects or mechanical failure
Head-on collisions are among the most violent types of crashes, often leaving survivors with life-altering injuries and families facing unbearable loss.
“Our hearts go out to the LeBlanc family and the entire UNM community during this unimaginably painful time,” said Gerald Singleton, managing partner at Singleton Schreiber. “We’ve represented many families affected by catastrophic head-on crashes, and we know how important it is to not only provide skilled legal representation, but also compassion and strength. Legal Options for the LeBlanc Family and Other Victims
Families affected by serious or fatal crashes may be entitled to seek justice through wrongful death or personal injury claims. These legal actions can provide essential financial support and hold the responsible parties accountable.
Wrongful Death Claims
The LeBlanc family may pursue a wrongful death claim on behalf of their two daughters. This type of lawsuit can provide compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of companionship and care
- Emotional suffering of surviving family members
Personal Injury Claims
Charles and Jenni LeBlanc, along with the occupants of the other vehicles, may also be eligible to file personal injury claims for:
- Emergency and ongoing treatment
- Pain and suffering
- Lost income and diminished future earning ability
- Emotional trauma and loss of quality of life
In cases like this, where a potential vehicle malfunction may have caused the fatal accident, third-party product liability claims may also be explored against a manufacturer, mechanic, or parts distributor.
