A Bay Area woman and her daughter tragically passed away on June 14th when their Tesla crashed into a tree at high speeds near Santa Clara.
On June 14th Beidi Chambers, 44, and her daughter Elyse, 12, had missed their optometrist’s appointment leading her husband Christopher Chambers to track their whereabouts. According to a report by the SF Chronicle, Christopher set out in his own Tesla with their eight-year-old son Ethan only to come across a horrifying scene. On the side of the San Tomas Expressway was a crumpled white Tesla, a 2021 Model Y belonging to his wife, emergency responders confirmed the two occupants were dead.
Police investigators, nearly five months later, have yet to determine the cause of the crash. All that Christopher knows after speaking to Santa Clara officers and crash witnesses is that Beidi was driving north on San Tomas Expressway at around 50 mph when the Tesla suddenly accelerated and swerved off the road, striking a tree, causing it to burst into flames.
Data recorded by the Tesla app showed that Beidi’s car reached a top speed of 86 mph before the crash. According to statements made by Christopher, Beidi was a careful driver with no marks on her driving record and he could not fathom her being reckless with her daughter as a passenger. These thoughts have led Christopher to wonder if something went wrong with the Tesla, Santa Clara police are also exploring this possibility.
Instances of complaints made in December 2019 from Tesla drivers reporting instances in which unintended acceleration occurred were brough to the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Tesla has rejected claims in the past, regarding petitions to “recall all Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles produced from 2013 to the present” due to the reports of unintended and sudden acceleration.
Two weeks following Beidi Chambers’ crash, the NHTSA began reviewing a second petition alleging that “a defect in Tesla models 3,Y,S, and X from years 2013 to 2023 cause sudden, unintended acceleration” leading to injuries and crashes.
