Kihei Man Dies Days After Moped Crash Near Liloa Drive and Piikea Avenue

Kihei Man Dies Days After Moped Crash Near Liloa Drive and Piikea Avenue

A Kihei resident has died following a serious moped crash that occurred last week in South Maui. Kenneth Gricus, 62, passed away on the morning of Monday, June 2, 2025, five days after being hospitalized for injuries sustained in the wreck.

The accident took place around 9:52 am on Tuesday, May 28, near the intersection of Liloa Drive and Piikea Avenue. According to investigators, Mr. Gricus had been riding a 2022 YN moped northbound on Liloa Drive. As he approached a roundabout, he reportedly lost control and struck a raised curb near a crosswalk. The impact caused him to be ejected from the moped and thrown onto the roadway.

Emergency responders transported him to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was initially listed in stable condition. Tragically, his condition worsened over the following days, and he succumbed to his injuries on June 2.

Maui police confirmed that Gricus was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. They also noted that speed did not appear to be a contributing factor, though the investigation is still underway.

If your loved one was injured or killed in a moped or motorcycle crash, call Singleton Schreiber to learn more about your legal options.

How Road Hazards and Helmet Use Can Affect Moped Safety

While early reports indicated that Kenneth Gricus lost control of his moped near a roundabout, questions remain about what caused the crash. Sudden changes in elevation, uneven curbs, poorly marked crosswalks, or even debris in the road can create dangerous conditions for moped riders, especially in areas with narrow lanes or confusing infrastructure.

Even a slight design flaw or lack of maintenance can be enough to cause a rider to lose balance, particularly at low speeds when navigating features like roundabouts or raised curbs. In such cases, the condition of the roadway could play a significant role in determining liability.

The fact that Mr. Gricus was not wearing a helmet may have increased the severity of his injuries. While Hawaii does not require helmets for all moped riders over 18, medical experts consistently agree that helmets significantly reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury and death in single-vehicle crashes.

“Cases like this one are often more complex than they appear at first glance,” says Brett Schreiber, managing partner at Singleton Schreiber. “Families deserve to know whether a dangerous roadway, lack of signage, or other preventable factors contributed to their loved one’s death. We work hard to uncover the full story and fight for the accountability they deserve.”

Legal Options for the Family of Keneth Gricus

When a fatal crash occurs, grieving families may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim to pursue compensation for medical bills, funeral expenses, and the long-term emotional and financial loss of a loved one.

If further investigation reveals that a defective roadway, poor maintenance, or inadequate signage played a role in the crash, there may be grounds for legal action against one or more parties. Potentially liable entities could include:

  • The city or county of Maui – if the road design was hazardous or if the area had been reported as unsafe and not properly maintained
  • A private contractor of a construction firm–  if recent work in the area created unsafe conditions or failed to meet safety standards
  • A product manufacturer, if the moped had a mechanical defect that caused the crash

A thorough investigation will help to determine exactly what went wrong and whether compensation may be available.

If you’ve lost a loved one in a similar crash, speaking with a knowledgeable attorney can help protect your rights and begin the process of holding the responsible parties accountable. Call Singleton Schreiber today to learn more.

Small Plane Crashes into San Diego Murphy Canyon Neighborhood Early Thursday Morning, Killing Multiple People

Small Plane Crashes into San Diego Murphy Canyon Neighborhood

Update as of June 18, 2025: According to a preliminary NTSB report, the small jet that crashed into San Diego’s Murphy Canyon neighborhood in May descended below the recommended glide path during its approach and struck power lines before crashing. The report revealed that key runway alignment lights at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport had been out of service since March 2022, and the airport’s automated weather system was offline due to a power surge. While it is unclear whether the pilot was aware of these outages, investigators are examining how the lack of navigational aids and poor visibility may have contributed to the crash. A final report is expected in the coming year. (Source: AP News)

Just before 4 am on Thursday, May 22, 2025, a small jet crashed into a residential neighborhood in Murphy Canyon, near Tierrasanta in San Diego. The crash occurred at approximately 3:47 am in the 3100 block of Salmon Street. The aircraft, a Cessna 550, was en route to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport when it went down, igniting a massive fire that destroyed multiple vehicles and damaged at least 10 nearby homes.

San Diego Fire-Rescue officials confirmed that the crash site was engulfed in flames and scattered with wreckage, including charred cars, downed tree limbs, and twisted aircraft debris. Hazmat teams responded due to the presence of jet fuel, and emergency crews worked alongside military personnel to sweep homes for potential victims. Fortunately, no residents were found injured inside their homes.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that six people were on board the plane. At this time, there have been three known fatalities. Sound Talent Group music agency confirmed that three of its employees, including co-founder David Shapiro (42), died on the plane that crashed.

As of May 24th, the other victims have been identified as Emma Huke (25), Celina Kenyon (36), Kendall Fortner (24), Dominic Damian (41), and Daniel Williams.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are actively investigating the crash.

Weather Instrumentation Failure at Montgomery Field Raises Safety Concerns in Plane Crash Investigation

At the time of the crash, key weather instruments at Montgomery Field Airport were not functioning properly, according to the National Weather Service. The crash occurred under poor visibility and low ceiling conditions. The airport’s Automated Surface Observing Station (ASOS) had stopped reliably transmitting data two days earlier, forcing reliance on nearby Miramar air station and Gillespie Field for weather updates. The pilot expressed concern about the differing conditions between airports just before the crash. While the City of San Diego initially denied any reported outages, it later clarified that the FAA, which maintains the ASOS, had not informed them of any issues. The malfunctioning weather system has raised serious safety concerns, especially in low-visibility conditions.

Crashed Cessna Citation Owned and Operated by Daviator LLC

According to crowdsourced reports, the aircraft was a Cessna S550 Citation, owned and operated by Daviator LLC.  Records show that the sole employee and registering agent of the LLC was David Shapiro, one of the reported fatalities.

Aircraft Details: Cessna S550 Citation S/II

Owner/operator:  Daviator LLC

Aircraft Registration: N666DS

Departure airport:  Wichita-Colonel James Jabara Airport, KS (KAAO)

Destination airport:  San Diego-Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, CA (MYF/KMYF)

The Dangers of Plane Crashes in Residential Areas

When an aircraft goes down in a populated neighborhood, the result can be catastrophic. Fires from jet fuel can spread rapidly to surrounding homes, vehicles, and vegetation. The impact itself may crush structures and vehicles, endangering lives not only onboard but also on the ground. Debris can scatter over large areas, creating further risk for injury or death.

Crashes like the one in Murphy Canyon can be caused by various factors, including:

  • Pilot error
  • Poor visibility due to weather conditions, such as fog
  • Mechanical failure or maintenance issues
  • Air traffic control miscommunication
  • Bird strikes or other airborne obstacles
  • Defective components or aircraft design flaws

At the time of the crash, the area was experiencing dense fog, which may have impacted visibility and flight operations. However, the FAA and NTSB investigations will ultimately determine the root cause.

“Tragedies like this demand answers, not just for the families of those who were onboard, but for the entire community that was put at risk,” says Domenic Martini, attorney at Singleton Schreiber. “At Singleton Schreiber, we’ve handled numerous cases involving aviation accidents and fires, and understand the complex emotional and legal challenges families face. Our firm is committed to seeking the truth and pursuing justice for those affected.

Legal Options for Neighborhood Residents and The Families of Those Who Died in the Plane

Victims of plane crashes and their families may be entitled to compensation for a range of damages, depending on the circumstances. In this case, two main groups may have legal recourse:

  • Homeowners and residents: those whose homes were damaged or destroyed may be able to file claims for property damage, emotional distress, loss of use, temporary relocation costs, and more
  • Families of the deceased passengers: if the crash occurred due to negligence, whether by the pilot, maintenance crew, air traffic control, or the aircraft manufacturer, surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim

Aviation accident litigation can be highly complex, involving federal investigations, expert analysis, and multiple potentially liable parties. Working with a law firm that has the resources and experience to handle these types of cases is essential.

FedEx Driver Marvin Esplana Dies After Experiencing Medical Emergency on Highway 99 And Causing Multi-Vehicle Crash

FedEx Driver Marvin Esplana Dies After Experiencing Medical Emergency

A tragic collision involving three vehicles occurred on Highway 99 near Kingsburg, California, on Thursday, May 15, 2025. California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to reports of a crash just north of Avenue 384 just before 6:20 pm.

According to CHP officials, 51-year-old Marvin Esplana of Visalia was driving a FedEx semi-tractor/trailer southbound when he reportedly suffered a medical emergency. This sudden event caused him to veer into the northbound lanes, where his big rig struck a Honda Civic and a Volvo XC90 before crashing into a concrete center median wall.

Esplana was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The drivers of the Honda and Volvo sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Investigators do not suspect that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The CHP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Medical Emergencies Behind the Wheel and What Other Drivers Can Do

Medical emergencies can strike without warning, and when they happen while someone is driving, the results can be devastating. From heart attacks and strokes to diabetic episodes or seizures, these medical events can impair a driver’s ability to stay in control of their vehicle, potentially leading to serious or fatal collisions.

If you’re on the road and notice a driver behaving erratically, like swerving, braking unexpectedly, or failing to maintain their lane, it’s important to take action while maintaining your own safety. So, what can you do?

  • Keep a safe distance: Give the vehicle plenty of space. Don’t try to pass or confront the driver.
  • Call 911: Report the vehicle’s location, direction of travel, and a description of its make and model. The sooner emergency services can intervene, the better the outcome may be for everyone involved.
  • Avoid distractions: Stay alert and focused on traffic conditions around you. A quick reaction could help prevent a collision.

“Our hearts go out to the family of Marvin Esplana and the other drivers involved in this terrible accident. Medical emergencies on the road are uniquely difficult situations, both medically and legally,” says Brett Schreiber of Singleton Schreiber. “We’ve represented many individuals and families impacted by unexpected health crises that turn into traffic tragedies, and we’re committed to helping them navigate the complex aftermath with care and clarity.”

Legal Options for Victims and Their Families

In crashes caused by medical emergencies, the question of liability can be complex, but victims and their families may still have legal recourse.

For Marvin Esplana’s family:

Although Mr. Esplana suffered a medical emergency, his death occurred while he was operating a commercial vehicle for FedEx. If evidence shows that his employer pushed him to drive under unsafe conditions, his family may have grounds to pursue a workers’ compensation death benefit claim.

For the drivers of the Honda Civic and Volvo XC90:

The other drivers involved who suffered minor injuries may be entitled to recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, property damage, and other losses.

Three Teenagers Killed in Head-On Collision on Highway 1 Near Lompoc

car crash

A devastating crash on Sunday evening has left three teenagers dead and two adults seriously injured in a four-vehicle collision on Highway 1 near Rancho And Julian, between Lompoc and Gaviota. The incident occurred shortly after 6 pm on May 18, 2025, and involved a 2007 Toyota Yaris, a 2024 Tesla Model 3, a 2012 Audi Q5, and a 2002 Honda Accord.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the southbound Toyota Yaris veered into the northbound lane and collided head-on with the Tesla, which then struck the Audi. The Honda was also impacted during the crash.

All three occupants of the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified as Jake Curtis (driver), 18 of Goleta, Michael Ochsner (passenger), 17 of Santa Barbara, and Alexander Wood (passenger), 15 of Santa Barbara. All three were students at Dos Pueblos High School and lifeguards with Santa Barbara County.

The Tesla’s driver, Hafez Nasr, 54, and passenger, Saghar Golpayegani, 53, both of Lompoc, sustained major injuries and were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, one by ambulance and the other via helicopter.

Two other teenage drivers, Luke Karmen, 16, and Daniel Switzer, 17, were behind the wheel of the Audi and Honda, respectively, and reportedly sustained only minor injuries.

Understanding the Dangers of Head-On Collisions

Head-on collisions are among the most deadly types of crashes, especially when they occur at high speeds or on rural highways like State Route 1. These accidents often happen when a vehicle drifts out of its lane, whether due to distraction, fatigue, inexperience, or unsafe passing maneuvers.

Young and inexperienced drivers can be particularly vulnerable to such incidents. That’s why it’s essential for teen drivers to take certain precautions:

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions. Phones, loud music, or conversations can easily take attention away from the road.
  • Maintain a safe speed. Driving at or below the posted speed limit allows more time to react to unexpected hazards.
  • Avoid risky overtaking or lane changes. These moves can be especially dangerous on narrow or winding roads.
  • Practice defensive driving. Always be aware of what other drivers are doing and leave extra space between vehicles.

While the full circumstances of this collision are still under investigation, this tragedy underscores the importance of safety and responsibility on the road, regardless of age.

“This heartbreaking incident has left families and an entire community in mourning,” says Brett Schreiber, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber personal injury law firm. “We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the young individuals who lost their lives, and our sincere wishes for recovery to those who were seriously injured. In the aftermath of such a devastating event, it is crucial that families receive both compassionate support and knowledgeable legal guidance. Our firm is committed to providing both.”

Legal Options Available for Victims and Their Families After A Collision

In the wake of a catastrophic incident like this, victims and their families often face medical costs, funeral expenses, emotional trauma, and a range of legal complexities. Fortunately, there are legal avenues available to help them seek justice and compensation. Depending on who is found to be at fault for causing the accident, victims and their families may recover the following damages.

The Families of Jake Curtis, Michael Oschsner, and Alexander Wood

The parents or legal guardians of the deceased teenagers may be eligible to pursue wrongful death claims. These lawsuits can provide compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of companionship
  • Emotional suffering
  • And more

Hafez Nasr and Saghar Golpayegani

As seriously injured survivors, Masr and Golpayegani may have the right to pursue personal injury claims to recover damages such as:

  • Emergency medical treatment and ongoing care costs
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost income and diminished earning capacity
  • Emotional distress

Even if the at-fault party is deceased, a claim can still be filed through their estate or insurance provider.

Luke Karmen and Daniel Switzer may also be able to pursue claims for any property damage sustained in the accident or medical bills they incur for treatment of their minor injuries.

Three Fatal Crashes Over the Weekend in San Diego Claim the Lives of Three Individuals

traffic accident

Over the last weekend of April 2025, three separate traffic accidents claimed the lives of San Diego residents.

The first incident occurred around midday Saturday, May 10, in eastern Chula Vista. Jeremy Valencia, a 34-year-old San Diego resident, was riding with a group of motorcyclists when he crashed at the intersection of Otay Lakes Road and Wueste Road. Valencia was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at approximately 12:45 pm, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Later that same afternoon, around 6:00 pm, another fatal crash occurred. Zechariah Lanier, a 23-year-old man from Lemon Grove, died when his vehicle veered off an elevated freeway connector and landed on the westbound lanes of State Route 94, just east of I-15. Authorities confirmed that Lanier died at the scene.

The third deadly crash happened Sunday evening, May 11, around 8:00 pm in La Mesa. A 2017 Ducati motorcycle carrying two riders collided head-on with a 2019 Ford Explorer at the intersection of Avocado Boulevard and Explorer Road. The motorcyclist, 22-year-old Roby Roel of El Cajon, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 20-year-old female passenger was seriously injured and transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital. The SUV driver, a 40-year-old La Mesa man, sustained minor injuries.

If you or someone you love has been affected by a serious accident in San Diego, don’t wait to seek support. Contact Singleton Schreiber today to discuss your legal options and protect your rights.

The Ongoing Dangers of Traffic Accidents in San Diego

These tragic incidents highlight the ongoing dangers drivers and motorcyclists face on San Diego roads. While traffic accidents can happen anytime and anywhere, certain risk factors increase the chances of severe or fatal crashes.

Common causes of traffic accidents in the San Diego area include:

  • Speeding or reckless driving
  • Distracted driving (including texting or using a phone)
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Poor road conditions or a lack of signage
  • Unsafe lane changes or failing to yield
  • Mechanical failures or defective vehicle parts

Motorcyclists, in particular, face added vulnerability due to the lack of protection a bike offers in comparison to a passenger vehicle.

“Our hearts go out to the families and friends of Jeremy Valencia, Zechariah Lanier, Roby Roel, and the others involved in these fatal collisions,” says Gerald Singleton, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber. “These devastating crashes serve as a painful reminder of just how quickly lives can be changed forever. We’ve helped many families navigate the aftermath of tragedies such as these, and we are here to support anyone who needs guidance in the wake of a fatal accident.”

Understanding Legal Options for Victims and Their Families

Each of the recent fatal accidents in San Diego presents different circumstances, and with them, different legal pathways for justice and recovery.

For the fatal motorcycle crash in Chula Vista, Jeremy Valencia’s family may have the following options:

  • Wrongful death claim if evidence shows road hazards, defective motorcycle parts, or third-party negligence contributed to the crash
  • Product liability claim if a mechanical failure or manufacturing defect is suspected
  • A claim against a governmental entity responsible for road maintenance, if poor road design, lack of signage, or dangerous conditions played a role in the fatal crash

For the fatal freeway fall crash on SR-95, Zechariah Lanier’s family may have the following options:

  • Wrongful death claim if a roadway defect, lack of protective barriers, or dangerous roadway design is determined to be a contributing factor
  • Claims against vehicle manufacturers if mechanical failure, such as brake malfunction or steering failure, is suspected
  • Government liability claim if inadequate signage, lighting, or guardrails contributed to the crash

For the fatal head-on collision in La Mesa, Roby Roel’s family may have the following options:

  • Wrongful death claim if the SUV driver was at fault or partially at fault
  • Product liability claim if the motorcycle had mechanical issues contributing to the crash

The injured passenger involved in the crash with Roel may be able to obtain compensation through a personal injury claim against the at-fault driver. She may obtain compensation for damages such as:

  • Medical bills
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost income
  • And more

The SUV driver involved in that same collision may be eligible to seek compensation for property damage, medical bills, and more if Roel is found to be at fault for causing the accident.

In all of these cases, an experienced personal injury attorney can help the victims and their families understand their options and choose the best path forward. Motorcyclist Injured in Makawao Crash at Baldwin Avenue and Iki Drive

Motorcyclist Injured in Makawao Crash at Baldwin Avenue and Iki Drive

A female motorcyclist was injured on Monday, May 12, 2025, following a collision with a vehicle at the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Iki Drive in Makawao, Maui. First responders from the Maui Police Department and Engine 2 out of Paia arrived at the scene after reports that the rider was down on the roadway.

The motorcyclist received on-site medical attention before being transported for further care. The exact nature and extent of her injuries have not been released, and authorities have not yet confirmed the condition or identity of the driver involved. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

If you or someone you love has been hurt in a motorcycle or vehicle accident in Maui County, it’s important to understand your legal rights and options. Contact Singleton Schreiber today for a free consultation.

Common Causes and Dangers of Maui Motorcycle Accidents

Makawao’s scenic landscape and rural charm are part of what make it special, but the region’s narrow roads and limited visibility can create real hazards, especially for motorcyclists. Baldwin Avenue and Iki Drive, like many intersections in Upcountry Maui, present unique safety challenges where even a brief moment of inattention can lead to life-changing consequences.

Some of the most common causes of motorcycle crashes in Maui include:

  • Driver inattention – Many motorcycle crashes occur when car or truck drivers fail to see riders, especially at intersections.
  • Speeding or taking turns too fast – Sharp curves and uneven pavement are harder to navigate at high speeds.
  • Failure to yield – Misjudging a motorcycle’s speed or failing to yield the right of way can lead to devastating collisions.
  • Limited shoulder or escape space – Narrow roads and limited room to maneuver often leave motorcyclists with no margin for error.
  • Impaired or distracted driving – Alcohol, drugs, and smartphone use all continue to contribute to serious crashes across the islands.

According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, motorcyclists are disproportionately represented in fatal and serious injury crashes. The vulnerability of riders, especially in rural or mixed-speed zones, means that every safety measure matters.

“We’ve seen how life can change in an instant for motorcyclists and their families,” said Julia Bryant, an attorney with Singleton Schreiber. “Our team has years of experience handling cases like this across Hawaii, and we’re proud to stand behind the Makawao community not just in courtrooms, but as the 2024 and 2025 Gold Sponsor of the Makawao Rodeo. When serious crashes happen, we’re ready to help families find the support and justice they deserve.”

Legal Options for Those Involved

At this stage of the investigation, it is not yet clear who was at fault for the crash on Baldwin Ave and Iki Drive. That uncertainty doesn’t change the importance of legal guidance for both parties involved.

If the crash was caused by the other driver’s negligence, such as failing to yield, speeding, or distracted driving, the motorcyclist may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Medical expenses (past and future)
  • Lost wages during recovery
  • Pain and suffering
  • Long-term rehabilitation costs
  • Property damage
  • And more

If the motorcyclist was at fault, the driver may also have legal rights, particularly if they were injured or if their vehicle was damaged.

Regardless of who is ultimately determined to be at fault, both parties may benefit from early legal representation to:

  • Secure evidence
  • Navigate insurance claims
  • Protect their rights during the investigation

Singleton Schreiber is committed to advocating for accident victims throughout Maui and across the Hawaiian Islands. We’re deeply rooted in the community and honored to support local events like the Makawao Rodeo.
