A tragic collision involving three vehicles occurred on Highway 99 near Kingsburg, California, on Thursday, May 15, 2025. California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to reports of a crash just north of Avenue 384 just before 6:20 pm.
According to CHP officials, 51-year-old Marvin Esplana of Visalia was driving a FedEx semi-tractor/trailer southbound when he reportedly suffered a medical emergency. This sudden event caused him to veer into the northbound lanes, where his big rig struck a Honda Civic and a Volvo XC90 before crashing into a concrete center median wall.
Esplana was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The drivers of the Honda and Volvo sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Investigators do not suspect that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The CHP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Medical Emergencies Behind the Wheel and What Other Drivers Can Do
Medical emergencies can strike without warning, and when they happen while someone is driving, the results can be devastating. From heart attacks and strokes to diabetic episodes or seizures, these medical events can impair a driver’s ability to stay in control of their vehicle, potentially leading to serious or fatal collisions.
If you’re on the road and notice a driver behaving erratically, like swerving, braking unexpectedly, or failing to maintain their lane, it’s important to take action while maintaining your own safety. So, what can you do?
- Keep a safe distance: Give the vehicle plenty of space. Don’t try to pass or confront the driver.
- Call 911: Report the vehicle’s location, direction of travel, and a description of its make and model. The sooner emergency services can intervene, the better the outcome may be for everyone involved.
- Avoid distractions: Stay alert and focused on traffic conditions around you. A quick reaction could help prevent a collision.
“Our hearts go out to the family of Marvin Esplana and the other drivers involved in this terrible accident. Medical emergencies on the road are uniquely difficult situations, both medically and legally,” says Brett Schreiber of Singleton Schreiber. “We’ve represented many individuals and families impacted by unexpected health crises that turn into traffic tragedies, and we’re committed to helping them navigate the complex aftermath with care and clarity.”
Legal Options for Victims and Their Families
In crashes caused by medical emergencies, the question of liability can be complex, but victims and their families may still have legal recourse.
For Marvin Esplana’s family:
Although Mr. Esplana suffered a medical emergency, his death occurred while he was operating a commercial vehicle for FedEx. If evidence shows that his employer pushed him to drive under unsafe conditions, his family may have grounds to pursue a workers’ compensation death benefit claim.
For the drivers of the Honda Civic and Volvo XC90:
The other drivers involved who suffered minor injuries may be entitled to recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, property damage, and other losses.
