Common Causes of Car Accidents
Car accidents can be caused by a variety of factors. It is the responsibility of all on the road to exercise caution and follow the rules of the road in an effort to keep everyone safe. Common causes of car accidents may include:
- Running red lights or stop signs
- Distracted driving, like talking on the phone, texting, or eating while driving
- Speeding, which reduces the amount of time drivers have to react to changing conditions
- Drunk or drugged driving, impairs judgment and impacts a driver’s reaction time and motor skills
- Reckless driving, such as weaving through traffic, tailgating, and more can increase the likelihood of collisions
- Poor road or weather conditions
- Vehicle defects like mechanical failures
- And more
When drivers engage in any of the above-listed activities, and other dangerous driving behaviors, they increase the likelihood of causing an accident and potentially hurting others on the road. Some safe driving practices drivers can implement to increase safety include:
- Obeying posted signals like stop lights and signs
- Maintaining focus on the road
- Adhering to posted speed limits
- Driving sober
- Adjusting their speed when driving in inclement weather or on roads in poor condition
- And more

The first man was identified by the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office as 39-year-old Enrique Rangel Barrera. Barrera, from Acampo, was the motorcyclist who collided with a semi-truck in Escalon.
The collision occurred just after 10 am on SR 78 near Wynola, CA. A group of motorcyclists was traveling east when one member of the group crossed into the westbound lanes when going around a curve. The rider, a 66-year-old man riding a Harley-Davidson Road King, sideswiped a Chevrolet Silverado truck pulling a trailer, and was ejected from his motorcycle.
Police arrived at the scene to find the motorcyclist with a compound leg fracture and his motorcycle on the side of the road. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was cooperating with police. The SUV was damaged on its front end.
Just after midnight LAFD was called to a vacant one-story home at 121 Mathews Street, near Pennsylvania Avenue. When they arrived there was heavy flames and smoke, which required them to use several hose lines to extinguish the flames. It took 24 minutes and the work of more than 30 firefighters to knock down the fire.
SDPD reported that the motorcyclist was traveling east on Grand Avenue in heavy, stop-and-go traffic. He illegally entered the designated bicycle lane to pass the stopped traffic. As he traveled through the intersection of Grand Ave and Kendall Street, the Jeep, which had been traveling west on Grand Ave, began a southbound turn onto Kendall Street, and struck the motorcycle.
