Fatal Single-Car Accident in Pasadena Leaves Three Dead and Three Injured

Fatal Single-Car Accident in Pasadena Leaves Three Dead and Three Injured

Three people died on Saturday morning, May 11, in Pasadena, California. Just after 2:30 am, a Tesla Model 3 sedan was involved in a single-car accident that killed three of the six occupants.

Fatal Single-Car Accident in Pasadena Leaves Three Dead and Three InjuredThe sedan was heading west on Foothill Boulevard when the driver failed to properly negotiate a curve in the road. The car hit the curb which sent it into the air, according to Pasadena Lt. Anthony Russo. After becoming airborne, the car collided with two city light poles, a power pole, and a building located at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Vista Avenue. The car came to a stop several hundred feet west of the building it hit.

All six occupants of the vehicle were between the ages of 17 to 22. Russo said that police believe speed was a contributing factor and that there was evidence at the scene that suggested alcohol may have been involved. “It’s too soon for us to tell if the driver was impaired or if any of the occupants were under the influence,” said Russo.

The three individuals who died were men between the ages of 18 and 21, one of whom was the driver of the vehicle. The ages of the other three occupants, two females and a male were not immediately available. City spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said the three injured occupants suffered substantial injuries, though their conditions were not known at the time of her statement.

According to Russo, investigators will continue looking into this incident to determine the cause of the crash and whether or not the car’s autopilot feature was engaged at the time of the incident.

Factors That Contribute To Car Accidents

Car accidents can be caused by a variety of factors, including driver error, weather conditions, road conditions, manufacturer errors, and more.

Driver Error

  • Distracted driving (texting, talking on the phone, eating, talking to other passengers, etc)
  • Failure to yield the right of way
  • Fatigued or drowsy driving
  • Inexperienced driving
  • Reckless driving (weaving in and out of traffic, road rage, etc)

Weather Conditions

  • Rain, snow, or ice on the roads reduces traction
  • Fog or mist can impair visibility
  • High winds affecting control of the vehicle

Road Conditions

  • Potholes or uneven pavement
  • Debris or objects on the road
  • Construction causing congestion and confusion on the road
  • Lack of proper signage or road markings

Vehicle Malfunctions

  • Steering mechanism issues
  • Tire blowouts
  • Brake failure
  • Electrical system failures
  • Faulty airbags or seat belts
  • And more

Other factors that may also contribute may include environmental factors and medical conditions.

Each of these factors, either alone or in combination with one another, can contribute to the occurrence of car accidents.

“Our hearts go out to the families who lost their loved ones and those who were injured in the Saturday morning crash,” says Brett Schreiber, attorney at Singleton Schreiber, “as a personal injury attorney I’ve seen firsthand the heartbreaking impact a fatal car accident can have on families, friends, and community. It’s important that those involved in this accident, and others who’ve experienced similar situations know that they may have legal recourse and could consider contacting a car accident lawyer.”

Bellflower Freeway Underride Crash: Pickup Truck Driver Expected To Survive After Accident With Semi-Truck

Bellflower Freeway Underride Crash

On the morning of Friday, May 10th, a pickup truck and a semi-truck were involved in a serious accident on the eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway in Bellflower, California.

Bellflower Freeway Underride CrashAccording to officials, the driver of a pickup truck remarkably suffered only non-life-threatening injuries after his truck became pinned underneath the back end of a semi-truck as they were traveling eastbound on the 91. The accident occurred near the 605 Freeway on Friday morning.

After the accident, both vehicles caught on fire, though it was quickly put out when firefighters arrived on the scene. Investigators expect both drivers to survive.

What Makes Truck Accidents So Dangerous?

Accidents involving large trucks like semis can be some of the most dangerous accidents. This is due to the significant difference in weight between the average vehicle and a semi-truck. The sheer mass of a large truck can inflict devastating damage upon impact, often resulting in severe injuries and even death.

Accidents like the one that occurred on Friday in Bellflower are called underride accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines truck underride accidents as “collisions in which a car slides under the body of a truck—such as a tractor-trailer or single-unit truck—due to the height difference between the vehicles”. When these types of accidents occur, the car’s passenger compartment may become crushed, which may potentially kill or seriously injure the occupants of the vehicle.

In an effort to prevent underride crashes, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that trailers have a rear safety bar, called an underride guard (CFR 393.86). However, there are no regulations in place that require them to be regularly inspected.

“As a personal injury lawyer, my heart goes out to the victim of the accident that occurred Friday in Bellflower,” says Brett Schreiber of Singleton Schreiber. “While we are relieved to hear that he escaped with non-life-threatening injuries, the trauma of such a terrifying ordeal can linger long after the physical wounds have healed. It’s important that the victim of this accident and others involved in similar accidents know that they may have legal recourse and could consider contacting a personal injury attorney to learn more about their options.”

Safety Measures That Can Help Prevent Underride Accidents

Underride accidents pose significant risks to drivers and passengers alike. To mitigate these dangers, it’s crucial to implement effective safety measures. Here are some strategies that can help to prevent underride accidents:

  • Maintaining safe following distances – drivers should keep a safe distance between them and large trucks, especially when driving behind them. This distance allows for better visibility and more reaction time in case of sudden stops.
  • Avoid driving in blind spots – drivers should avoid driving for prolonged periods of time in the blind spots of trucks. If you can’t see their mirrors, they probably can’t see you. Staying out of the blind spot zones minimizes the risk of underride accidents.
  • Be aware of road conditions – adverse weather or low visibility can have an impact on the safety of road conditions. If you’re driving in inclement weather, reduce your speed and increase the following distance, especially when driving near large trucks.
  • Installing enhanced underride guards – truck drivers can install strong and more durable underride guards. These can significantly reduce the likelihood of underride accidents and their severity as they act as barriers to prevent smaller vehicles from sliding underneath the body of the truck in the event of a collision.

Fatal Three-Car Crash Near Fallbrook Leaves Four Dead

Fatal Three-Car Crash Near Fallbrook Leaves Four Dead

Friday, May 10th, four people died in a North County San Diego car crash on state Route 76 near Fallbrook. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials, the collision happened around 11:20 pm, just east of Horse Ranch Creek Road.

Fatal Three-Car Crash Near Fallbrook Leaves Four DeadThe collision involved three vehicles, a silver Chrysler 300, a white Jeep Gladiator, and a silver Toyota Camry. The driver of the Chrysler was driving east on SR-76 when he suddenly swerved into the westbound lanes where he struck the Jeep. According to CHP Sergeant Andrew Kind, the head-on collision between the Chrysler and the Jeep caused the Toyota Camry behind the Jeep to be involved in a minor side-swipe collision with one of the cars.

In the collision, the driver of the Chrysler, the 58-year-old man driving the Jeep, and two adult passengers in the Jeep were killed. A third passenger in the Jeep suffered major injuries but survived.

At this time, officials are unsure why the driver of the Chrysler swerved into oncoming traffic. It is still unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor. CHP is continuing to investigate the accident.

Update: officials identified two of the deceased victims in the Fallbrook collision as two prominent Bay Area politicians, Hope Wood and Peggy Moore. The couple were passengers in the Jeep that was hit head-on by the Chrysler that crossed into their lane.

The Dangers of Roadway Departure Collisions

Roadway departure crashes (RwD) are defined by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) as a crash that occurs when a vehicle crosses an edge or center line, or otherwise leaves the traveled way. Roadway departures often cause serious injuries, and can often result in death. Many roadway departure accidents result in head-on collisions. Of the roadway departure fatalities that occurred between 2016 and 2018, 15,744 of the deaths were the result of head-on collisions.

Strategies To Reduce Head-On Collisions

Fatal head-on collisions can happen due to various road conditions such as undivided lanes, speed limits above 50 mph, rural areas, curves in the road, and wet or icy roads. To reduce the chances of head-on collisions there are several different steps that state and local agencies can take to help reduce head-on collisions and their severity, including:

  • Center Line Pavement Markings – these help to separate opposing lanes and make it clear to drivers where their lane ends.
  • Warning Signs For Curves – these help to warn drivers that the road curves up ahead.
  • Rumble Strips On Center Lines – these help to alert drivers they are crossing over into the oncoming lane.
  • Center Line Buffer Area – adding additional space between two solid center line markings can increase the space between opposing lanes helping to reduce head-on crashes.
  • Increasing Median Widths – this affords more space between opposing lanes and can decrease the chances of head-on collisions occurring.
  • Median Barriers – these create a buffer between opposing lanes, and can greatly increase the number of head-on collisions that occur.

State and local authorities can take these steps to help prevent head-on crashes and reduce the number of deaths that occur each year.

“Our hearts go out to the families of the four victims that died in this weekend’s crash,” says Brett Schreiber, attorney at Singleton Schreiber, “I’ve seen firsthand how devastating these head-on accidents can be for the families of those involved. It is important that the families of the victims of Friday’s crash, and others in similar situations, know that they may have legal recourse and could consider contacting a personal injury attorney to learn more about their options.”

Victims of Fatal I-5 Crash Identified as Camp Pendleton-Based Marines

Victims of Fatal I-5 Crash Identified as Camp Pendleton-Based Marines

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office officially identified two service members as the deceased from last week’s I-5 crash near Oceanside. The victims were identified as Jacob Johnson, 21, and Eduardo Hernandez Zambrano, 19, US Marines who were stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Victims of Fatal I-5 Crash Identified as Camp Pendleton-Based MarinesThe accident occurred just before 9 pm on Thursday, April 25th. The 2016 Hyundai sedan was traveling in the southbound lanes of I-5, near Cocklerburr Road, when the driver – believed to be Johnson – lost control of the vehicle and struck a trailer parked along the shoulder of the road.

When medical personnel arrived, they had to extract both men from the vehicle. Unfortunately, they were both later pronounced dead on the scene.

According to the medical examiner, both men were wearing seat belts at the time of impact. The cause of death was determined to be multiple blunt force injuries and was an accident. However, officials are still investigating what caused the vehicle to lose control and crash into the trailer.

At this time, officials believe the sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to losing control and crashing.

How Speed Affects The Severity Of Injuries In Car Collisions

Speed not only increases the likelihood of a collision, but it also has a direct impact on the consequences. There is a direct correlation between speed and injury severity in car accidents. When vehicles collide at higher speeds, the force of impact is exponentially increased, thus magnifying the damage inflicted on both the vehicle and its occupants.

Data collected by Caltrans vividly illustrated this point. According to their data, each year in California there is an average of 3,600 fatalities and 13,000 serious injuries caused by car accidents. Around 34 percent of the injuries and fatalities caused are related to speeding.

Moreover, the aftermath of high-speed accidents extends beyond the physical injuries of those involved in the accident, devastating families, disrupting livelihoods, and shaking communities. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Jacob Johnson and Eduardo Hernandez Zambrano,” says attorney Paul Starita, of Singleton Schreiber, “as a personal injury lawyer, I’ve seen how devastating accidents like this one impact the families and communities of those involved. It’s important for the families involved to know they may have options and can speak with a car accident attorney to learn more about their options.”

While speeding is a major factor in accidents, it is not the only factor that contributes. Other common causes of car accidents include:

Distracted driving – using phones, eating, changing the radio station, or even talking to a passenger may divert the driver’s attention from the road
Reckless driving – engaging in behaviors such as tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic, ignoring traffic signals, and other aggressive driving mannerisms
Driving under the influence – operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or even certain medications can impair judgment, reaction times, and coordination while driving
Inclement weather conditions – adverse weather conditions like rain, fog, snow, or ice can reduce traction and visibility, making it more challenging to control the vehicle
Poor road conditions – uneven surfaces, lack of proper signage, inadequate lighting, potholes, and more can create hazardous driving conditions
Fatigued driving – operating a vehicle while drowsy or tired can impair cognitive function and reaction times
And more

Three People Injured In Santa Cruz Apartment Fire Caused by E-Bike Battery

Three People Injured In Santa Cruz Apartment Fire

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Three people were injured last week in an apartment fire caused by a malfunctioning electric bike battery.

Three People Injured In Santa Cruz Apartment FireFire crews were called to an apartment complex on Grant Street around 3:30 p.m. April 30 after reports that an e-bike had burst into flames in one of the buildings. The fire then spread to the structure, leading residents of all four of the building’s units to be evacuated.

Two residents were transported to the hospital with burn injuries and are in stable condition. A woman who lived in a neighboring building and tried to put out the fire with a garden hose suffered minor burn injuries and received medical treatment.

“Burns are complex injuries,” said Brett Schreiber, a partner at Singleton Schreiber and the leader of the firm’s personal injury practice. “Even when they appear mild, they can be hiding more serious injuries under the surface. That’s why they require specialized treatment, which can come with higher medical bills.”

“If you’ve been burned in a fire incident, it may be a good idea to meet with a personal injury attorney. An attorney will help you review what legal options you might have to cover the damages you or your loved ones have suffered.”

In addition to the injuries, fire crews estimated a total of $1 million in damages to the units in the building that burned, all of which were deemed to be currently unlivable due to water and smoke damage.

Electrical Fires: A Growing Concern

Residential fires caused by electrical malfunction have been on a steady rise in the U.S. Data compiled by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) shows that in the decade from 2012 to 2021, electrical malfunction fires rose by 11%, with more than 24,000 such fires in 2021.

And while those fires turn out deadly less often (17% fewer deaths), they injure more people and lead to significantly more financial damage. In fact, the annual total dollar loss spiked by 27% over that decade, even after adjusting for inflation. Electrical fires in U.S. residential buildings cause well over $1 billion in damage per year, and climbed as high as $1.3 billion in 2019 — in part due to a fire at a hotel construction site in New Orleans that caused over $26 million in damage and killed three people.

Burn Victim Rescued From House Fire in Mira Mesa

Burn Victim Rescued From House Fire in Mira Mesa

MIRA MESA — A man is being treated for burn injuries after a house caught fire in the 10400 block of Greenford Drive Wednesday evening.

Burn Victim Rescued From House Fire in Mira MesaFirefighters responded shortly after 5:15 p.m., when the single-story home just north of Gold Coast Drive began to burn, and extinguished the fire by 6 p.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The firefighters rescued a man in his 60s from inside the home. Paramedics took the man, who has not yet been identified, to a local hospital for burns of as-yet undisclosed severity.

“First and foremost, we are glad that the first responders on the scene were able to contain the fire quickly while also getting this man out safely to receive medical treatment,” said Gerald Singleton, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber.

“If you experience a fire at home, it may be in your best interest to consult an attorney,” Singleton said. “We’re here to help you explore legal options that could lessen the burden of your medical bills or get the appropriate payout from your insurance company for any damage incurred in the fire, so that you can focus on peace of mind for you and your family.”

House Fires Are Back on the Rise in the U.S.

Even with a nearly 50% reduction in annual fires reported since 1980, there is still a home fire every 88 seconds in the United States, according to research by the National Fire Protection Association.

A civilian suffers a non-fatal fire injury every 40 minutes, with house fires accounting for more than half of all fire-related injuries as of 2022.

And despite the long-term reduction since 1980, fire reports and deaths are on the rise in the U.S. after hitting a low point in the early 2010s.

Cooking is still by far the most common cause of residential fires — more than all other causes combined — but cooking-related fires have declined slightly in recent years, while fires related to electrical malfunctions are on the rise.
