A devastating head-on crash in southeastern New Mexico has left two people dead and three others injured. According to New Mexico State Police, the collision occurred just after midnight on Thursday, July 24, 2025, on US Route 380 near mile marker 196 in Chaves County.
Investigators say 69-year-old Charles Johnson was driving eastbound when his vehicle crossed the center line into the westbound lanes, striking an oncoming vehicle. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, along with 40-year-old Heather Morris, a passenger in the other vehicle. The driver and two other passengers in Morris’s vehicle were seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital. Their current conditions have not been released.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused Johnson to veer into oncoming traffic. The crash remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.

What Makes Head-On Collisions So Dangerous?
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous and deadly types of vehicle accidents. When two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide, the impact is often catastrophic, especially at highway speeds. Victims can suffer life-altering injuries or lose their lives in an instant.
Common causes of head-on collisions include:
- Driver fatigue, especially during late-night or early-morning hours
- Impaired driving, including alcohol or drug use
- Distracted driving, such as texting or reaching for something inside the car
- Speeding or reckless passing on two-lane roads
- Medical emergencies, like heart attacks or seizures
- Poor road conditions or signage, which can confuse drivers and lead them into the wrong lane
“This was a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts go out to everyone impacted by this crash,” said attorney Brian Colón of Singleton Schreiber. “Head-on collisions are often the result of a single mistake, whether due to distraction, fatigue, impairment, or a medical issue. In these cases, victims and their families may be entitled to seek accountability from the at-fault driver or other responsible parties, such as vehicle manufacturers or government agencies, if road conditions played a role.”
Legal Options for Victims and Families
While the exact cause of this crash is still unknown, investigators have confirmed that Charles Johnson’s vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. This suggests he may have been at fault, which opens the door for potential legal claims by the surviving victims and the family of Heather Morris.
Those injured in the crash may be able to file personal injury claims to recover compensation for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering. The family of Heather Morris may also have grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit to seek justice and financial support for their immense loss.
If it’s discovered that a mechanical failure, medical event, or other factor contributed to the crash, Johnson’s family may also have limited legal options. However, the primary focus of any civil litigation is likely to be on obtaining justice and compensation for those in the other vehicle who suffered due to no fault of their own.
