On the evening of Thursday, September 4, 2025, a devastating crash in Bolivar County left one child dead and two others injured. According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP), the collision occurred around 8:00 pm on Highway 1 south of Gunnison when a northbound 2021 Ram 2500 collided with a southbound 2025 Kia Sportage.

Tragically, a three-year-old child inside the Kia was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. A one-year-old passenger sustained moderate injuries, while the driver, 29-year-old Barni L. Flore of Gunnison, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Memphis hospital. The Dangers Associated with Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in the United States, with children often being the most vulnerable victims. Several factors can contribute to crashes like the one on Highway 1, including:

  • Driver negligence – distracted driving, speeding, and failure to yield are common causes of severe crashes
  • Poor road conditions – lack of proper lighting, inadequate signage, or poorly maintained roads can increase risks
  • Vehicle issues – mechanical failures or defective parts, such as brakes or airbags, can make collisions more deadly
  • Weather conditions – rain, fog, or reduced visibility may worsen the likelihood of an accident

When determining liability in a crash, multiple parties may be considered responsible, such as:

  • Drivers – if negligence, recklessness, or impaired driving played a role
  • Vehicle manufacturers – if defective equipment or vehicle malfunctions contributed to the crash
  • Government entities – if poor road design, lack of signage, or failure to maintain safe conditions contributed to the accident

“When a crash like this occurs, families are left searching for answers while dealing with unimaginable grief,” says Wes Fulgham, attorney at Singleton Schreiber. “Understanding the factors that may have contributed – whether driver error, unsafe roads, or even a vehicle defect – is an important step in uncovering the truth and holding the right parties accountable.”

Legal Options for Victims and Their Families

Families devastated by crashes like this have the right to explore legal action. Depending on the circumstances, the following claims may be pursued:

  • Personal injury claims – injured victims, such as the driver and the one-year-old passenger, may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
  • Wrongful death – the family of the three-year-old may seek damages for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional suffering caused by the tragic loss of a child.

No family should have to navigate the aftermath of a devastating accident alone. The experienced injury attorneys at Singleton Schreiber are committed to helping victims and their loved ones pursue justice and fair compensation. Contact us today for a free consultation to discuss your case.
