Three people were critically injured after a medical helicopter crashed onto US Highway 50 near 59th Street in Sacramento on Monday night, October 6, 2025, according to officials.
The crash occurred just after 7 pm on the eastbound lanes of the freeway, prompting a large emergency response and a full closure of the roadway. Authorities said the helicopter, operated by Reach Air Medical Services, went down without striking any vehicles.
The victims were identified as the pilot, nurse Suzie Smith, and a paramedic, two women and one man, who were all transported to local hospitals in critical condition, according to Sacramento Fire Capt. Justin Sylvia. One victim became trapped under the wreckage and was rescued with the help of bystanders, who assisted firefighters by lifting part of the downed aircraft to free the individual and move them to a waiting ambulance.
“We’re extremely lucky that there were only three victims,” Sylvia said at the scene. “It’s unfortunate they’re in critical condition, but all of our ambulances were off scene with transportation and care being performed on these victims within 20 minutes of the incident.”
Aerial footage showed the red helicopter lying on its side, the cockpit smashed, and debris scattered across the freeway. Authorities said they were thankful the aircraft’s jet fuel did not ignite, which could have resulted in a catastrophic fire.

The Dangers of Helicopter Crashes and Jet Fuel Explosions
Helicopter crashes, while relatively rare, often result in severe or life-threatening injuries when they do occur. Medical helicopters, in particular, face additional risks due to the challenging environments in which they operate, including flying at low altitudes, landing in tight areas, and often responding in poor weather or low-visibility conditions.
While in this crash, the helicopter’s jet fuel did not ignite, but in other situations, even a small spark could trigger a powerful and fast-spreading fire. Jet fuel burns at extremely high temperatures, and a post-crash explosion on a busy freeway could have endangered not just the crew but also nearby motorists and first responders.
While investigators have not yet determined what caused the crash, potential factors in helicopter accidents can include mechanical failure, pilot error, weather conditions, or issues with flight control systems. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) typically conduct in-depth investigations to determine the exact cause.
“A crash like this is a reminder of how dangerous air medical transport can be, even for highly trained professionals,” said Brett Schreiber, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber. “Helicopter crews risk their lives to help others, and when something goes wrong, the injuries are often devastating. Our firm stands ready to support those affected and ensure they get the care, answers, and accountability they deserve.”

The victims of this Sacramento helicopter crash may have several legal avenues for recovery depending on the findings of the investigation. If the crash resulted from equipment failure, maintenance issues, or operational negligence, the victims could pursue personal injury claims to recover compensation for:
- Medical expenses and long-term rehabilitation
- Lost income and reduced earning capacity
- Pain, suffering, and emotional distress
- Future care needs and quality of life impacts
