A transit bus carrying 40 passengers overturned in Lancaster Wednesday morning, after hitting a set of railroad tracks off Sierra Highway in Lancaster, California.
Reports indicate that every passenger on the bus suffered injuries, including an eight-year-old boy who was airlifted from the scene.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the bus lost control and hit the tracks at 11:17 a.m. at the intersection of Sierra Highway and West Avenue C in Lancaster. The Los Angeles County Fire Department was on the scene along with the Antelope Valley California Highway Patrol. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation; however, a report from Bakersfield Now indicated that a projectile may have been thrown at the bus before it crashed.
Legal Help for Those Injured in the Kern Transit Crash
While it is still early, all accounts indicate that all passengers onboard were hurt, with injuries ranging from minor to severe. According to attorney Gerald Singleton, it’s not surprising in a case involving an overturned bus. “When a passenger bus overturns, passengers are subjected to extreme forces that can cause serious injury. Rotational forces can cause joint dislocations and brain or nerve injury.”
“Unrestrained passengers can be thrown in the opposite direction of the bus’s motion”, Singleton went on to say, “causing them to hit windows, seats, ceilings, other passengers, and even be ejected. Passengers are often thrown into seatbacks, sidewalls, windows, or each other, it’s just horrific.”
Unfortunately for all of those involved, even relatively minor injuries can have a major impact on their lives. The costs associated with medical treatment, ongoing physical therapy, and lost wages can be significant. Fortunately, the law in California allows victims an avenue to recover compensation in situations such as these. However, cases involving bus crashes can be incredibly complex.
“It’s incredibly important that anyone hurt in this crash considers speaking with an attorney who understands these issues and has experience handling complex litigation.” Singleton said.
