A tragic crash in Walker County, Alabama, claimed the life of a Huntsville man on the afternoon of July 22, 2025. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, 40-year-old Joshua Leblanc was driving a 2021 Tesla Model 3 when the vehicle veered off Hill Road near Drummond Switch Cut Off Road, approximately two miles south of Empire, at around 2:45 pm.

The Tesla reportedly struck a guardrail and multiple trees before bursting into flames. First responders transported Leblanc’s remains to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, where his identity was later confirmed. At this time, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Possible Causes and Liability in Fiery Single-Vehicle Crashes

While the investigation is still ongoing, several possible factors could explain why a vehicle like a Tesla might leave the roadway and catch fire. Crashes of this nature are complex, and it’s critical to consider multiple causes, some of which may involve product failure or third-party negligence.

Potential causes and contributing factors may include:

  • Vehicle malfunction, such as brake failure, steering defects, or battery issues
  • Driver error, including distracted driving, fatigue, or speeding
  • Defective vehicle design, especially related to crashworthiness or fire risk in EVs
  • Roadway hazards, like sharp turns, inadequate signage, uneven pavement, or poorly placed or designed guardrails

Any of these factors could point to legal responsibility beyond just the driver. Depending on the findings of the investigation, potentially liable parties might include:

  • The vehicle manufacturer for defects in design or production
  • A parts supplier if a specific component failed
  • Government agencies or contractors responsible for maintaining a safe roadway
  • Other drivers, if another vehicle’s actions forced the Tesla off the road

“Our hearts go out to Mr. Leblanc’s family as they grieve this sudden and heartbreaking loss,” said Danielle Mason, attorney at Singleton Schreiber. “When accidents involve potential vehicle defects or unexplained fires, it’s important to conduct a thorough investigation. Families deserve to know whether a mechanical issue, manufacturing error, or another party’s negligence played a role, and if so, they may have the right to pursue justice for their loved one.”

Legal Options for the Family of Joshua Leblanc

In the aftermath of a fatal accident like this, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. If the crash or resulting fire was caused by a defective vehicle component or the vehicle’s failure to protect the occupant during impact, a product liability lawsuit against the automaker or parts manufacturer may be appropriate. Alternatively, if a dangerous road condition or negligent maintenance contributed to the incident, a government agency or contractor could bear some responsibility.

A successful legal claim may help families recover compensation for medical and funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and the loss of financial support and companionship. Singleton Schreiber recently secured a $243 million verdict in a case where Tesla’s Autopilot feature contributed to a fatal crash in Florida, highlighting our firm’s deep experience handling complex cases involving electric vehicles.
