A devastating three-vehicle collision on State Route 67 in Poway claimed the lives of five people on Friday afternoon, July 19, 2025. The crash occurred just after 12:30 pm near the intersection of SR-67 and Iron Mountain Drive, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. The violent impact sent one of the vehicles careening into a ravine, sparking a half-acre brush fire that was quickly extinguished by Cal Fire crews.

Among the victims were Emmanuel Rivera Abarca, 32, and his father, Marcial Rivera Solorio, 59, who were both on their way to work when the crash occurred. Family members described the pair as hardworking, loving, and devoted men who cherished their families. Authorities have not yet determined what caused the multi-vehicle crash, but the Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is reviewing video footage as part of its ongoing investigation.

The Dangers of Multi-Vehicle Collisions

Multi-vehicle crashes, especially those involving high speeds or larger vehicles, can lead to catastrophic damage due to the chain reaction of forces. When multiple cars collide, the risk of serious injuries or fatalities increases because each vehicle can be hit from multiple directions. Fires, like the one sparked in this crash, are also a common hazard, especially when vehicles are pushed off-road or into hazardous terrain.

Common causes of multi-vehicle collisions include:

  • Excessive speed or unsafe following distances
  • Loss of control or overcorrection leads to cross-lane impacts
  • Driver distraction, impairment, or fatigue
  • Poor visibility, roadway design, or inadequate signage
  • Mechanical failures (e.g., tire blowouts, brake defects)
  • Post-impact hazards, such as vehicle fires or vehicles leaving the roadway

“Multi-vehicle collisions often involve tremendous force and can create complex, devastating crash scenes,” says Gerald Singleton, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber. “Our hearts go out to the families grieving such an unimaginable loss. In cases like these, it’s critical to understand the chain of events that led to the crash, identify all potential at-fault parties, and ensure that families receive the answers and justice they deserve. These are preventable tragedies that leave lasting impacts on loved ones.”

Legal Options for Families After a Fatal Crash

Families who lose loved ones in a deadly collision may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims against any parties whose negligence contributed to the crash. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, liability could rest with one or more drivers, a vehicle manufacturer (in cases of mechanical failure), or even government entities if unsafe road conditions played a role.

Compensation in a wrongful death case may cover:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of financial support
  • Loss of companionship and care
  • Pain and suffering of surviving family members
