On Thursday, September 5, 2025, 77-year-old Sun Hei Lee was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing Palahia Street around 10:15 am. According to Honolulu police, Lee was crossing the street outside of the marked crosswalk when a vehicle, driven by a 71-year-old motorist, traveling east, struck her. Lee was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but unfortunately, she later died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Lee remained at the scene of the crash and was not injured. Police confirmed that drugs, alcohol, or speed were not contributing factors in the fatal collision.

Pedestrian Accidents Are A Serious Concern in Hawaii

Hawaii continues to struggle with a high number of pedestrian accidents, many of which are fatal. This accident marks the 58th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, a sharp increase when compared to this time last year, with only 28 at this same time. Pedestrian fatalities make up a significant share of the state’s overall traffic deaths each year.

Pedestrian accidents occur for many different reasons in Hawaii, some of which include:

  • High volume of tourists who are unfamiliar with the roads
  • Driver distraction
  • Impaired driving
  • Much of the population relies on walking and biking for transportation
  • Dangerous intersections
  • Older infrastructure and roads
  • Overgrown foliage
  • Poor weather conditions
  • Limited visibility
  • And more

When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, the consequences are often devastating, especially when an elderly pedestrian is involved. Unlike drivers and passengers who are protected by seat belts and air bags, pedestrians are completely exposed. This lack of protection makes even lower-speed collisions potentially fatal.

Legal Options for Families After a Fatal Pedestrian Accident

When a loved one is killed in a pedestrian accident, families are often left with overwhelming grief, unexpected expenses, and unanswered questions. In Hawaii, surviving family members may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim against the at-fault party. While no amount of compensation can undo the loss, a claim can help ease the financial burden they now face. Potential damages the deceased’s family may recover include:

  • Medical expenses related to the accident
  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Lost income or financial support the victim would have otherwise provided
  • Loss of companionship and emotional support

“Taking legal action can also provide families with a sense of accountability and justice,” says Brett Schreiber, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber. “Beyond addressing financial hardships, these claims give families the chance to have their voices heard. Our role is to stand beside them, making sure their loved one’s life is honored and their rights are fully protected.”
