A deadly two-vehicle crash in Encinitas led to the death of 51-year-old Leonard Joseph Davison early in the morning on Saturday, August 9, 2025. The accident occurred around 5:20 am near the intersection of La Costa Avenue and Piraeus Street.

Authorities reported that Davison was driving a Nissan pickup truck when his vehicle collided with a Subaru crossover. He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he did not survive his injuries. Davison, a longtime Encinitas resident, was later identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Subaru driver, a man from Oceanside, was uninjured in the crash. Law enforcement arrested him at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility. He faces charges that include DUI, causing injury or death, and vehicular manslaughter.

The Ongoing Dangers of Drunk Driving

Despite decades of awareness campaigns and stricter laws, drunk driving continues to take lives on San Diego’s roadways and across the country. Alcohol impairs reaction times, decision-making, and motor skills, making it one of the most dangerous behaviors behind the wheel.

According to federal data, in 2023, someone in the US was killed in a drunk driving accident roughly every 45 minutes. Each of these deaths represents not just a statistic, but a family and community left to grieve an avoidable tragedy.

“The loss of Mr. Davison is heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with his family during this painful time,” says Gerald Singleton, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber. “Drunk driving collisions often involve severe impacts, devastating injuries, and irreversible consequences. Holding impaired drivers accountable is essential to protecting our communities and ensuring victims’ families have a path to justice.”

Wrongful Death Claims After A Fatal DUI Crash

Families who lose a loved one in a DUI accident may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim against the impaired driver. In California, spouses, children, and in some cases other close relatives may be eligible to file such claims.

Through legal action, surviving family members may seek compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical bills from the crash
  • Loss of the victim’s income and future financial support
  • Emotional suffering and loss of companionship

While no legal outcome can ever replace a loved one, filing a wrongful death claim can provide financial stability and hold negligent drivers accountable for their actions.
