A tragic predawn collision in Jackson, Mississippi, claimed the life of 22-year-old Brendon Keys and left another man critically injured early Sunday morning, July 20, 2025. The crash occurred just after 4 am on Gallatin Street and involved an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and two pickup trucks, according to the Jackson Police Department.

Authorities say Keys was riding as a passenger on the ATV when the collision occurred. The driver of the ATV, whose identity has not been released, sustained life-threatening injuries. One of the pickup truck drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, while the second truck driver fled before officers arrived.

The police have not yet disclosed what may have led to the crash, and the incident remains under investigation.

The High Risks of ATV vs Truck Collisions

Crashes involving ATVs and full-sized vehicles like pickup trucks are often devastating due to the inherent vulnerabilities of ATV riders. ATVs are not designed for road use and lack essential safety features such as seatbelts, airbags, and enclosed cabins. When an ATV is struck by a much larger and heavier vehicle, the force of impact can cause life-threatening or fatal injuries, even at relatively low speeds.

Some of the most common injuries resulting from these types of collisions include:

  • Head and brain trauma
  • Spinal cord injuries and paralysis
  • Broken bones
  • Internal bleeding and organ damage
  • Severe lacerations and road rash

These crashes often occur in low-light conditions or during early morning hours, when visibility is poor and drivers may not expect to encounter an ATV on city streets. Without adequate lighting or protection, ATV riders are extremely vulnerable in traffic.

“When an ATV collides with a full-sized truck, the physical forces involved are immense,” says attorney Letitia Johnson of Singleton Schreiber. “ATV riders simply don’t have the protection that a passenger vehicle provides, and unfortunately, that means injuries are often severe or even fatal. These cases can involve multiple contributing factors, vehicle speed, visibility, road conditions, and more. It’s important that victims and their families have someone to thoroughly investigate and advocate for them.”

Legal Options for Victims and Families After a Fatal ATV Accident

Victims of ATV collisions and the families of those who lose their lives have the right to pursue legal action when negligence is involved. In this case, Brendon Keys’ family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against any driver or party found responsible for the crash. The injured ATV driver may also have grounds for a personal injury claim, depending on the results of the investigation.

Potential compensation may include:

  • Medical expenses and emergency care
  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of companionship
  • Lost income or future financial support

Even if the fleeing driver is not immediately found, victims may still be able to file claims under uninsured motorists coverage.
